Edge cases

  • Generating an EAN, UPC, GTIN, or GS1-shaped barcode does not create ownership, registration, uniqueness, or retailer acceptance for its number.
  • EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, and ITF-14 use strict lengths and check digits; a visually rendered code can still be wrong for a business database.
  • Code 39 is less dense than Code 128, so the same information often produces a physically wider label.
  • Interleaved 2 of 5 requires an even count of numeric digits, while Pharmacode accepts only a bounded integer range.
  • The on-screen preview is not a substitute for testing the final printer, material, surface, scanner, distance, and application settings.
  • Reducing margins, using colored or light bars, stretching artwork, or rasterizing at low resolution can make a valid value unscannable.
  • A human-readable text override changes only the printed caption, not the encoded barcode data.

Which barcode format should I choose?
Use the exact format required by the receiving workflow. Code 128 is flexible for internal mixed-character identifiers; EAN and UPC are retail formats; ITF-14 is common on trade cartons; other formats serve specific legacy or industry systems.
Does this tool give me a UPC, EAN, GTIN, or GS1 number?
No. It only renders the value you provide. Obtain and manage identifiers through the organization, registry, marketplace, or business process that governs your products.
What is a barcode check digit?
It is a digit calculated from the preceding data digits and used to catch common scanning or typing errors. EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, and ITF-14 include check-digit rules.
Can I generate several barcodes at once?

Should I download SVG or PNG?
SVG is preferable for scalable label design and print workflows because the bars remain sharp. PNG is convenient for office files and systems that require raster images, but it should not be enlarged after export.
Why does a valid barcode fail to scan after printing?
Common causes include narrow or blurred bars, insufficient quiet zones, poor contrast, scaling distortion, reflective or curved material, low printer resolution, and using a symbology the scanner is not configured to read.
